Four of our travel agents recently travelled to El Gouna in Egypt to explore this increasingly popular Red Sea resort – and since returning, they haven’t stopped talking about it.
From stunning marinas and turquoise lagoons to incredible value for money, El Gouna completely exceeded expectations. It’s very different to what many people picture when they think of Egypt – and that’s exactly why it’s becoming such a popular destination for winter sun.

Here’s why our team loved it so much.
A Different Side of Egypt
Located just north of Hurghada on the Red Sea, El Gouna feels like a completely different world.
It’s a beautifully designed, gated resort town, built around a network of lagoons, islands and stylish marinas. The architecture is warm and elegant, with terracotta buildings, sandy tones and palm-lined streets giving it a relaxed Mediterranean feel.
Security is also taken very seriously. Access to the resort is controlled, and unless you live there, work there, or are staying in one of the hotels, you won’t be entering. This helps keep the area calm, safe and never overcrowded.
Another thing our agents loved is how easy it is to get around. The resort is mostly flat and compact, meaning nothing is more than about 10 minutes away.
Incredible Value for Money
One thing that genuinely surprised our team was just how affordable everything is.
Despite the luxury surroundings, prices are very reasonable, making it a fantastic option for travellers looking for winter sun without spending a fortune.
Some examples from the trip included:
Tuk tuk rides around the resort – under £1
A one-hour tuk tuk tour of the marinas – around £5
A full-day boat trip to Eden Island with transfers, food and drinks – around £65
A 90-minute full body massage – around £50
Eating out is also very reasonably priced. One of our agents’ most expensive meals – including cocktails – came to just £32, while another meal with two courses and a drink cost around £13.
It’s the kind of destination where you can comfortably explore, dine out and enjoy activities without constantly checking your budget.
Beautiful Marinas & Relaxed Beach Life
El Gouna is centred around several beautiful marina areas, each with its own atmosphere.
Abu Tig Marina and Fanadir Marina are the main social hubs, filled with stylish restaurants, cafés, bars and boutiques overlooking rows of impressive yachts.
The atmosphere in the evenings is fantastic – fairy lights across the streets, music drifting from waterfront restaurants and people enjoying drinks by the water. It’s often compared to places like St Tropez, but without the high price tag.
Many hotels also sit directly on the lagoons, meaning guests can enjoy private beaches with calm, crystal-clear water.
So Much to See and Do
Whether you want to relax or stay active, El Gouna offers plenty of things to do.
Popular activities include:
Snorkelling and diving trips in the Red Sea
Boat trips to nearby islands such as Eden Island
Paddleboarding across the lagoons
Kite surfing and water sports
Quad bike desert safaris
Sunset cruises
Parasailing and speedboat trips
Horse riding or camel rides along the beach
Families are well catered for too, with activities like go-karting and an inflatable aqua park, while golf lovers can enjoy several courses in the area.
Even something as simple as jumping in a tuk tuk and exploring the marinas is a fun way to experience the resort.
Fantastic Food Scene
One thing all of our agents agreed on – the restaurants in El Gouna are brilliant.
Downtown El Gouna and the marina areas are full of fantastic places to eat, from relaxed waterfront grills to stylish restaurants serving international cuisine.
A few favourites from the trip included:
Tandoor – incredible Indian and Thai dishes overlooking the marina, with live music on certain evenings
La Playa – great grills, pasta dishes and excellent cocktails
Chicha – perfect for sharing dishes like tacos, quesadillas and tempura prawns
Sahara – a great place to try local Egyptian dishes such as Fattah
With prices so reasonable, it’s easy to try somewhere different each evening.
Stylish Hotels With Plenty Going On
One of the hotels our agents stayed at was Cook’s Club El Gouna, an adults-only hotel known for its stylish and laid-back atmosphere.
The hotel combines relaxation with a lively social vibe. Highlights include:
A large pool area with incredibly comfortable sun loungers
A private lagoon with a small beach area
Stylish, minimalist rooms
Live DJ sets and entertainment throughout the week
Activities such as paddleboarding, walking tours and cocktail-making classes
Breakfast offers plenty of choice, including freshly made eggs and omelettes, Egyptian breads, pastries, fruit, waffles and pancakes.
There is also a spa nearby – where our agents enjoyed a very reasonably priced 90-minute massage.
Perfect for Winter Sun
During the visit, daytime temperatures were around 21–22°C, making it a perfect winter sun destination.
However, El Gouna works just as well for summer holidays, longer stays or even short breaks thanks to how easy it is to explore.
You can spend your days relaxing on the beach, exploring the marina restaurants, heading out on boat trips or enjoying the wide range of activities available.
The Verdict From Our Team - Our agents summed it up perfectly:
“We could talk about this place for days.”
El Gouna offers something a little different – a destination that feels luxurious, relaxed and beautifully designed, while still being incredibly good value.
If you’re looking for winter sun, great food, beautiful scenery and a relaxed atmosphere, El Gouna is definitely one to add to your travel list.
